During Germany's last-16 match against Denmark at Euro 2024, a 21-year-old man from Osnabrück was arrested after climbing onto the roof of the BVB Stadion in Dortmund, as reported by the local police.
The incident took place at 10:11 p.m. local time on Saturday, with the man being monitored by drones and a helicopter before his arrest at 11:44 p.m. The man, dressed in black with his face covered, was found with camera equipment in his bag and claimed he was there to take photos.
Authorities confirmed that there was no danger posed to others in the stadium, ruling out any political motivation behind the man's actions. Further investigation revealed his previous attempts to take photos at great heights in other locations.
The man has been released while charges of trespassing are being pursued. UEFA emphasized the importance of stadium safety and security, commending the police, stadium, and local authorities for their swift and professional handling of the situation.
Both Dortmund police and UEFA will conduct investigations to determine how the man managed to access the stadium roof. Despite the interruption caused by the incident, Germany emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Denmark, advancing to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.
