A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and released on bail following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson.
The 29-year-old Nottingham Panthers player had his neck cut by a skate during a match against Sheffield Steelers last month. The American was treated by medics on the ice and taken to hospital, but died as a result of the injury.
South Yorkshire Police revealed that an arrest had been made on Tuesday, but that the man in question, who has not been named by police, had been released on bail.
Det Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said: “We’ve been carrying out extensive inquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.
“We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our inquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department of Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.
“Adam’s death sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world.”
Johnson had been playing in a match on October 28 when he was injured in a collision with rival player Matt Petgrave.
The match was immediately called off and the estimated 8,000 spectators evacuated as Johnson received treatment on the ice.
