A man has been arrested following a suspected assault outside a Longbenton social club.
In the early hours of Monday, April 24, police were contacted by a concerned staff member from the venue on Chester's Avenue who reported an alleged assault by a man who was believed to have brandished a bladed article.
Officers immediately attended the scene and began to review CCTV at the premises from which a 41-year-old man was identified as the prime suspect. After receiving information that the suspect was outside an address at Clent Way in Longbenton – he was arrested.

The man was taken into custody where, upon being searched, it was also discovered he was in possession of a number of suspected illicit substances. On Tuesday (April 25) the man was charged with six offences including common assault, possession of a knife, possession of a Class C drug, and possession of a Class B drug.
Detective Sergeant Carl Wray from Northern Area Command’s Criminal Investigation Department said: “This was a great arrest which came about as a result of our communities reporting the incident, enabling us to act immediately. Thanks to a speedy response by officers in the area, a suspect was soon located and arrested, and quick-time enquiries brought about a substantial number of charges.
“I want our communities to know that we will not tolerate violence of any kind, and we are determined to place offenders before the courts and secure effective justice for victims. As ever, I’d ask people to continue reporting this type of behaviour to us.”
