
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a female student in her university accommodation.
Carla Georgescu, 19, was found dead in her halls at the University of Lancashire in Preston on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services attended after being called at around 1.15pm with a report of a ‘sudden death’.
Police have confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Hartlepool, who was known to Ms Georgescu, has been arrested and remains in custody.
The university said the man was "unconnected" to the establishment, and officers said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We know that news of this young woman’s death and the police activity will be concerning to many, but we want to tell you that we have a team of detectives and uniformed officers working hard to try and establish the circumstances.”
They also advised members of the public with any concerns or information to to contact police on 101 quoting log 0560 of Feb 5th.
Ms Georgescu was reportedly in the second year of a clinical psychology degree.
The University of Lancashire confirmed it is working closely alongside the police as their investigations continue, and that "the wellbeing and safety of our students and staff" was its priority.
A university spokesperson said: "Support is being offered to anyone within our university community who is affected by this devastating incident.
"Our thoughts are very much with loved ones, friends, and all those who knew our student at this incredibly distressing time."
