Man arrested after police forced to shut down bridge

A man has been arrested after police were forced to shut the Silver Jubilee Bridge (SJB) between Runcorn and Widnes.

Emergency services were called to the area shortly after 1.15pm on Wednesday and shut the crossing to road and pedestrian traffic. A Cheshire Police spokeswoman officers attended the scene following "concerns for the safety of a man".

In addition to Cheshire Police vehicles and officers in attendance, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also deployed an appliance to West Bank in Widnes as part of the response. Two ambulances and two rapid response cars from North West Ambulance Service were on standby in West Bank.

A bystander told the ECHO a boat had also been sighted in the River Mersey. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and cross the waterway using the Mersey Gateway instead.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said the man has been arrested for causing a public nuisance.

She said: "Just after 1.15pm today officers were called to Silver Jubilee Bridge following the concern for the safety of a man.

"Emergency services attended the scene. The man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance.

"All road closures have since been lifted."
