A man has been arrested as part of a garda investigation into money scams in Ireland.
Gardai seized laptops, phones, documentation, a quantity of cash and a car as part of a search on Wednesday in Swords while probing the fraudulent claiming of (PUP) and the laundering of the proceeds of international Business Email Compromise (BEC) frauds. Nearly €50,000 was stolen as a result of the scam which was paid into a number of bank accounts set up using false identities.
Additionally, a separate €120,000 was stolen in an online fraud and paid into these same bank accounts. A garda spokeswoman said: "This morning’s search operation was conducted with assistance from gardai on secondment at the Department of Social Protection.
"During the course of the search laptops, phones, documentation, a quantity of cash and a car were seized. A male, aged in his late 20s, was arrested and is currently detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 in Swords Garda Station."
