Man arrested after Glasgow flight forced to divert due to alleged disturbance

A MAN has been arrested after a Glasgow flight was allegedly forced to divert course.

The Glasgow Times previously reported that Tui flight TOM778 was set to head from Glasgow Airport to Antalya, before making an unscheduled landing at Newcastle International  Airport due to an alleged disruptive passenger on board.

The customer involved was apparently escorted off the aircraft and the flight eventually departed Newcastle for Antalya at 10.50pm.

Now, Northumbria Police have stated that the man allegedly involved has been arrested and released under investigation.

They added that enquiries are currently ongoing.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 6.40pm on Friday (May 24), we were made aware of a flight from Glasgow to Antalya having been diverted to Newcastle International Airport following a report of a disturbance on board.

“It was reported that a male was being abusive to staff on board the aircraft.

“The flight landed safely and officers arrested a man – aged 29 – on suspicion of being drunk while on board an aircraft.

“He has been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing.”

A Tui spokesperson previously said: "We’d like to apologise to customers on TOM778 from Glasgow to Antalya, who were required to divert to Newcastle due to a disruptive passenger on board the flight.

"Our goal is to ensure customers have the best possible flight experience, so this is not the way we wanted their holiday to start.

"The safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority and any unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated. The customer involved was offloaded from the aircraft and the flight was able to continue its journey.

"We have offered customers a gesture of goodwill in light of this disruption to the start of their holiday and to thank them for their patience and understanding."
