Man arrested after boy, 11, seriously injured in 'hit-and-run' crash

Police investigating a hit-and-run which left a 11-year-old boy in hospital have arrested a suspect. The child suffered serious injuries during a crash in Gorton on Sunday.

Today Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers have arrested and interviewed a suspect. A spokeswoman said: "A 33-year-old man has been arrested and bailed."

It follows an incident on Sunday afternoon which left the boy in hospital with serious injuries. His current condition has not been revealed.

The emergency services, including an air ambulance, were scrambled to the scene of the incident on Hyde Road at around 1.30pm. Police were called to reports of the collision - where a young boy, aged 11, was found to have been hit by a car. He was taken to hospital by paramedics with serious injuries.

The incident, outside Debdale Park, resulted in the road being cordoned off by officers between Reddish Bridge and Laburnum Road. Bus services were diverted, as well as traffic, which began to cause congestion on nearby side streets.

Police appealed for information following the incident, after the driver failed to stop. Officers established the vehicle had collided with the young boy, who was taken to hospital by paramedics with severe injuries.

One woman, who lives in a block of flats on Hyde Road, said she heard a 'loud bang' that startled her. When she went outside, she said there was an air ambulance that had landed on the bowling green, beside the entrance to the park.

She said: "There are a lot of accidents here - without a shadow of a doubt it’s one dangerous road. Even parents don’t use the crossing and run in-between cars. They go so fast."

Another male, who lives further down Hyde Road, said he knew something had happened when he saw the bus had been diverted away. He added: "I heard the air ambulance landing, and saw the Stagecoach bus was using Reddish Lane instead.

"My heart goes out to that young boy and the family. Something needs to be done about the way people drive on this road, it's scary what can happen."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said at the time: "Investigators are appealing for information and dash cam footage following fail to stop collision in Manchester. At around 1.20pm on Sunday 26 June 2022, we received a report of a collision on Hyde Road in the Debdale Park area.

"Officers attended and established that a vehicle had collided with a pedestrian and failed to stop at the scene. The pedestrian, an 11-year-old boy, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. Enquiries are ongoing."

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is urged to contact police via 0161 856 4741 quoting 1657 26/06/22. Information can also be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
