Man arrested after Audi smashes into Paisley high flat

A Paisley resident has told how a car ploughing through a high flat sounded like “the Blitz.”

A navy Audi A4 smashed through a metal fence and into a property in Hamilton Court around 10.45pm on Thursday night.

The resident, who asked not to be named, told how the car crashed into the building before coming to a sudden halt in what appears to be a common close area of the building.

He said: “The car was flying down the street.

“It crashed through a metal fence with no hesitation and smashed right into the building at full speed.

“It was like the driver just didn’t see the building because I didn’t see any brake lights go on.

“But the bang was horrific.

“If you can imagine in the old war movies, it was like that, like the Blitz.

“It is a miracle that at any point during the crash, which looked like a scene from a movie that nobody was hurt.

"Something from Fast and Furious, but it went wrong.

"Two guys were there. I was shocked to see them get to their feet so quickly.

“It was late so thankfully people were in bed and there was nobody out walking their dogs or kids playing or anything like that.”

The incident sparked a major response from the emergency services and gas engineers throughout the night.

Another resident explained: “He’s driven through a fence, managed by some miracle to avoid a telecoms box and crash into the building without causing any damage to the bottom of it.

“It must have been air borne which is absolutely terrifying.”

Police confirmed the 26-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 10.45pm on Thursday, August 18, to a report of a one car crash at Calside, Paisley.

“The two male occupants left the scene and were traced nearby and taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

“No one else was injured.

“A 26-year-old man, the driver, was later arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences and is due to appear in court at a later date.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: "We were alerted to reports of a road traffic collision involving one car on Calside, Paisley.

"Operations Control mobilised five appliances to the scene to assist emergency service partners in making the area safe."
