A man has been arrested after the Arab National Bank in Mayfair was targeted in a suspected armed robbery.
Armed police swooped on the bank in Curzon Street in central London around 2.15pm on Thursday to reports of an armed robbery.
“A man was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery at the scene and has been taken to a central London police station where he remains in custody,” said a Scotland Yard spokesperson on Friday.
“A suspected firearm has been recovered by officers.”
No injuries were reported.
“A crime scene has been established and enquiries are ongoing,” said the Met.
Curzon Street, which adjoins Park Lane, was taped off by police on Thursday.
An eyewitness who works in the area, who did not want to be named, told the Standard: "The whole street was cordoned off.
“I was outside, but the police officers said anyone who worked on the street had to go back inside. They were there for quite for quite some time.
“I think someone tried to hit the bank. It’s very, very foolish for someone to try that, especially in Mayfair, and especially with the Saudi Embassy so close, which usually have their own armed guards outside as well.
“So hopefully there will be no more attempts of this kind of thing in this area.”
Arab National Bank (ANB) is a one of the largest banks in the Middle East, and is based in Riadh, Saudi Arabia.
Arab National Bank has been approached by the Standard.
