Man and woman confirmed dead in car collision involving a lorry on A9 near Dunkeld

Two people are dead following a horrendous two-vehicle crash on the A9 in Perthshire on Thursday night.

A Mercedes C200 car crashed into a Man HGV on the A9, between Bankfoot and Birnam, near Dunkeld shortly before 6pm on October 6.

The male driver and female passenger of the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 37-year-old driver of the HGV was taken to Ninewells Hospital and later released.

Police and fire rescue services were out in the pouring rain to deal with the aftermath.

Sergeant David Farr from the Road Policing Unit at Perth said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man and woman who died following this crash.

“The investigation into the crash is ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash take place who has not yet spoken to police to contact us. We are also keen to obtain any dashcam from motorists driving on the road around the time of the crash.

“Anyone with information should contact Road Policing Officers through 101 with reference 2569 of 6 October.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 5.47pm on Thursday, October 6 to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry on the A9 near Dunkeld.

"Operations Control immediately mobilised three fire appliances and a heavy rescue unit to the scene."

The A9 between Bankfoot and Dunkeld remained closed overnight to allow investigations to be carried out.

Motorists at that time were driving in stormy conditions and failing light.

Both sides of the carriageway were closed.

Traffic Scotland posted a 31-mile diversion.

At 7.08pm, an hour after the accident, the road body warned that "HGVs are currently being stacked."

A spokesperson for the Enchanted Forest light show, which was happening at Faskally 15 miles north of the incident, said: “Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones in last night’s tragic accident on the A9.

"The closure of the road did impact the operations of the event on Thursday night, however Police Scotland were very quick to get diversions in place for those still travelling up to Pitlochry which meant most visitors, while a little later than planned, were able to make it to the show."

In Aberfeldy local authorities were braced for large quantities of redirected northbound traffic to pass through the town.

Online, a Birnam resident explained conditions on the major route linking Perth to Inverness: "A9 closed both directions. Traffic Scotland diverting southbound along A923, Blairgowrie road and northbound back down to Inveramond and through Crieff to Aberfeldy.

"I came off northbound at Bankfoot junction and managed to pull back onto A9 at Waterloo about an hour ago. Bankfoot very congested."

Later at 10pm, another motorist gave an update: "We’ve just come up from Perth and the A9 is still closed in both directions just south of Birnam, we came through Bankfoot but there are a lot of heavy goods vehicles stuck heading southbound. Prob best to take an alternate route if travelling tonight."

The A9 reopened at 7.20am on Friday, October 7 after a difficult night of police investigation at the scene.

It is just three weeks since an American tourist died on the same road within a stone’s throw of Birnam.

Jacalyn Margittay, from Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin died and two people were taken to hospital following a two-vehicle crash on the A9 just north of Dunkeld on Friday, September 16.
