A man and a boy have died after being washed off rocks while fishing at a beach in Sydney's east.

Emergency services were sent to Little Bay Beach just after 3pm on Monday on reports the pair were in the water, NSW Police said.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was rescued from the water by Surf Lifesavers and a nine-year-old boy was winched by a rescue chopper.

Paramedics performed CPR on the pair but they both died at the scene.

They are yet to be formally identified.

Their deaths follow several incidents involving boats capsizing on the Nepean River in Sydney's west, including the death of a 33-year-old woman.
