Man airlifted to hospital after serious M56 crash - a tanker driver has been arrested

A man was airlifted to hospital and another was arrested for dangerous driving after a serious crash on the M56.

A stretch of the motorway on the westbound carriageway was shut off for hours after the crash near junction 10 last night (Monday). Police said it involved a tanker, a HGV and a white Ford Transit van.

The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from Clock Face in Merseyside, was seriously injured, a spokesperson for Cheshire Police added. He was cut out of the van by firefighters.

He was then taken to Aintree Hospital in an air ambulance. He remains there in a stable condition.

The driver of the tanker, a 39-year-old man from Bury, was taken to hospital as a precaution. He was then arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The man remains in custody to be questioned by detectives. The driver of the HGV, a 54-year-old man from Belper, Derbyshire, was uninjured.

Officers are now appealing for any witnesses - or anyone with any footage of the incident - to come forward. The motorway reopened in the early hours of this morning after resurfacing work.

Anyone with any information or video footage in relation to the incident is asked to contact Cheshire police at www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, or on 101, quoting IML 1243277. Information can also be reported anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
