Man admits stabbing his 89-year-old grandmother to death

A man has admitted killing his 89-year-old grandmother in a knife attack. Sakunthala Francis suffered stab injuries at a house in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath, in south London, last June 21.

Police had attended after being alerted by London Ambulance Service at around 9.20pm and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her grandson, Verushan Manoharan, 32, was charged with her murder and was due to go on trial next month.

On Monday, the defendant, of Kingsley Road, Croydon, south London, appeared for a plea hearing before Judge Nigel Lickley at the Old Bailey. He denied murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter following the preparation of psychiatric reports. Judge Lickley adjourned sentencing until August 18 and remanded the defendant into custody.
