Man accused of murdering dad, found dead at home in Kolkata

KOLKATA: The decomposed body of a 61-year-old man, who was charged for the murder of his elderly father four years ago, was found inside his Baguiati house in Kolkata on Sunday afternoon.

Chandranath Chattopadhyay, who lived alone at the ground floor of his house at Baguiati Ashwininagar was found dead by cops after locals and a relative living on the upper floor complained of foul smell coming from the house. He was last seen four days ago and cops suspect he had died at least 72 years ago. His body was found leaning against the sofa as he sat on the floor.

Police said Chattopadhyay was a drunkard and possibly died of excessive consumption of alcohol. He was also under treatment for some mental ailment, cops added.

On October 28, 2019, Chattopadhyay was arrested for suffocating his father to death. He spent several months behind bars during which Baguiati cops even submitted a chargesheet against him at the court as his wife and children left the house and started living in Bengaluru. He had an elder brother who lives in the USA.

He was recently out on bail and had again started drinking, cops have learnt from relatives and neighbours. Several liquor bottles have been found in his home. Cops have sent the body for post mortem examination and have started an unnatural death case and have also informed his family in Bengaluru.
