Man, 79, killed by chainsaw in horror gardening accident as paramedics fail to save him

A 79-year-old man has been killed in a horrific gardening accident involving a chainsaw.

Rescue crews dashed to the property in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, at around 11am on Friday, after receiving reports of a pensioner suffering a serious injury.

Despite desperate attempts to save the man, he tragically died at the scene in Towers Close. West Mercia Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

The tragic pensioner died after he slipped off a step-ladder while using a chainsaw to trim his hedge, an eyewitness has confirmed.

Resident Andy Harrington said: "I’m a plane spotter. The air ambulance landed close to me and I got on my bike to take some pictures.

"I rode up the estate and when I got there were two ambulances.

"Next thing I knew armed response turned up along with more police cars. I was told the armed officers are medically trained and were in the area at the time.

"A chap who lives up the road said he’d heard a chainsaw going during the day and the man was of pensioner age. He had heard it going, and someone said he just slipped and the chainsaw killed him.

"There was an armed police vehicle parked on the road."

A resident, who lives in the quiet cul-de-sac near where the man was killed, said: "He was one of the kindest old fella's you could ever hope to meet.

"He lived in the house with his wife. He was very proud of his garden and especially the look of his hedges.

"From my understanding, he was on a step-ladder and slipped and the chainsaw hit him. It's so sad. We are very close on this road and are really shocked by what happened."

A force spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11am on Friday 6 May we were called to an address in Towers Close, Kidderminster, where it was reported that a man had been seriously injured while using a chainsaw.

"The man, who was 79, died at the scene. Police are not treating the death as suspicious and a report has been prepared for the coroner."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.01am to reports of an injured patient at a private address off Comberton Avenue.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham.

"On arrival, crews found one patient, a man in a critical condition.

"Sadly, despite the best efforts, it quickly became clear nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased on scene."
