Man, 59, dies after being struck by vehicle along Stuart Highway in Palmerston

A man has died in the Darwin satellite city of Palmerston after being struck by a vehicle, with major crash detectives now urging any witnesses to come forward.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the inbound lanes of the Stuart Highway near Yarrawonga Road around 6pm last night.

Despite CPR being conducted, the man, 59, was declared dead shortly after.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man stopped at the scene.

Inbound lanes of the Stuart Highway were closed for much of the evening while detectives investigated the crash, and authorities urged motorists to take alternative routes.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said police were investigating "whether there was any opportunity for the driver to avoid the crash".

He said the driver had returned a negative blood alcohol reading but that there "are indications" that the pedestrian was under the influence.

"It's another reminder to people to be aware of your surroundings, drive to conditions, expect the unexpected and take care on the road," he said.

Andrew Thomas — the director of services for St John Ambulance — told ABC Radio Darwin on Thursday morning that the incident was "very sad news".

He said there had also been two vehicle rollovers in the Alice Springs area in the past 24 hours which were reminders to "pay attention to the road and drive to the conditions".

After last night's incident, there have now been 46 deaths on the Northern Territory's roads so far in 2022, well above the 29 lives lost by the same time in 2021.

There have been several fatal pedestrian strikes on the territory's roads, as well, including an alleged hit-and-run that claimed the life of a woman in Darwin's CBD in February.

A 63-year-old man was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Temple Terrace in Palmerston, where police allege the driver did not stop.

Two people were charged in June after an alleged hit-and-run in Coolalinga, following the discovery of a human leg on the side of the Stuart Highway.
