Man, 31, now 'serious but stable' in hospital after tragic A77 crash in Ayrshire

Police are continuing to hunt a driver after a young man was seriously injured while helping his friends on the A77.

The 31-year-old was left fighting for his life after helping pals move a broken down motor on to the back of a trailer on Saturday night at around 7.05pm.

The man was struck by a dark-coloured saloon car on the northbound carriageway near Kilmarnock close to the A719 junction. The car did not stop at the scene.

Police and an ambulance raced to the scene and the victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he was in a critical condition.

Officials confirmed today that the injured man is now in a serious but stable condition in hospital and that the hunt to trace the car involved and the driver is ongoing.

Sergeant Kenny Malaney of the Road Policing Unit based in Govan said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to trace the dark-coloured car involved and its driver.

“At the time of the incident, there was a red Volkswagen Golf parked behind the trailer. The trailer was being towed by a Mercedes GLC. If you passed by, please get in touch with officers as you may have information that will assist this investigation.

“I would also appeal to anyone on the road around the time of the crash with dash-cam footage to contact us too.

“Information should be passed to police through 101 with reference number 2803 of February 18.”
