A man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman in Brighton.

Officers are investigating a report of a rape of a woman in her 20s, understood to have taken place overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday on Brighton beach, Sussex Police said.

The suspect, 28, remains in custody, police added.

“The victim is receiving support from specialist trained officers,” the force added.

“A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in custody at this time.”

It comes after a 51-year-old man was charged on Tuesday with the rape and sexual assault of a woman in a separate incident in Madeira Drive – a seafront road – on Sunday morning.

Officers arrested a man at the scene after reports of an incident near Black Rock car park at around 7.30am.

British national Akiyas Jameldeen, of Eden Road, Gossops Green, Crawley, was charged with two counts of oral rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration and was to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: “I commend the bravery of the victim who came forward to report this and who we continue to support with specialist officers.

“We are aware of the concern this incident will have caused in the community and will continue to work tirelessly with our partners to create a hostile environment for those who seek to come to the city for the purpose of offending against vulnerable people.”

In another case, three men were sentenced at Hove Crown Court last month for repeatedly raping a woman on Brighton beach and filming it in October last year.

Egyptian national Ibrahim Alshafe, 26, and Iranian national Abdulla Ahmadi, 26, were jailed for 21 years each for raping the woman, while Egyptian Karin Al-Danasurt, 21, who filmed it, was sentenced to 18 years and six months.
