Man, 23, charged with attempted murder of police officer in Kent

A 23-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in Kent.

Barry Rossiter is accused of driving into an officer in Ashford on January 26 in an incident that led to six people being arrested.

Kent Police said that a car had crashed at Coulter Road at around 3.15pm and then failed to stop at the scene, driving into the policeman - who was on foot.

“[The officer] sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, from where he has since been discharged to continue his recovery at home,” a statement read.

Rossiter, of Nickley Wood, Ashford, has been charged with driving a vehicle dangerously and assaulting an emergency worker.

He appeared before Maidstone Crown Court on Saturday and was remanded to a hearing at Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday.

Four other people, two men aged 19 and 37 and two women aged 19 and 32, were also arrested in connection with the incident. They are all from the local area and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

A sixth person, a 19-year-old man from Ashford, was arrested on Friday and remains in police custody.
