New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has defined democratic socialism in simple terms, telling comedian Theo Von that it means no one should be priced out of housing, childcare, or public transit.
Speaking on Von's podcast This Past Weekend, the mayor framed his politics as a fight over affordability in the most expensive city in the United States, where he said about one in four residents lives in poverty. Housing, childcare, and transit should be treated as non-negotiables rather than luxuries, he said, part of a life in which 'nobody is priced out of dignity.'
