New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a sweeping new policy restricting artificial intelligence in the city's public schools, affecting nearly 600,000 students from 2-K through eighth grade.
The one-year moratorium, which begins during the 2026-27 school year, has been described by city officials as the broadest student-facing generative AI restriction introduced by a US school system. The policy will prohibit students in younger grades from using generative AI tools, while high school students will receive AI literacy education and limited access to carefully supervised pilot programmes.
