Malta to ease Covid travel restrictions for Scots holidaymakers next week

Malta will ease Covid travel restrictions for holidaymakers from Scotland and the rest of the UK next week.

Currently, unvaccinated passengers arriving in Malta from the UK are required to isolate at a designated quarantine hotel for 14 days.

This measure will now be scrapped when travel restrictions change from Monday, April 11.

From then, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated tourists will be required to show evidence of a negative PCR test, which must be taken up to 72 hours prior to arrival.

They will also be able to enter the country if they provide a Covid recovery certificate, which cannot be older than 180 days.

Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne made the announcement as the country continues to progress through its ‘exit roadmap’

A statement from the Maltese government added: “Despite observing an increase in daily cases, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, has confirmed that Malta had the lowest rate of Covid-related ITU occupancy across the EU.

“This, together with the fact that the majority of the Maltese population has now received the third dose of the vaccine against Covid-19, will lead to further relaxing of Covid-19 measures, including easing of restrictions relating to incoming travel.”

It was also announced that a vaccine certificate will no longer be required for people attending outdoor seating events, or seated indoor events in Malta from Sunday, April 10.

The news will be welcome for Scots seeking to jet off on a holiday to the popular destination in time for the Easter.

People arriving back in Scotland from Malta are not required to test, show evidence of their vaccination or fill in a passenger locator form.

A number of countries across Europe and elsewhere have also started to lift their travel restrictions as they emerge from the worst of the pandemic.

However, Spain and Italy announced that it will be extending its current restrictions for at least another month.
