Malian authorities on Sunday announced the death of the defence minister, Gen. Sadio Camara, who was killed in a broad assault by jihadis and rebels on Saturday, the most recent violence in the junta-run nation, which has long struggled with militants connected to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group as well as a separatist uprising in the north.
In a post on the defence ministry’s Facebook page, the Malian government confirmed the death of the defence chief and expressed its condolences to his family. State-run television also broadcast the announcement of his death by spokesman Gen. Issa Ousmane Coulibaly.
