Malaysia To Resume Search For MH370 11 Years After Disappearance: ‘Hopes Are Renewed’

Malaysia’s Transport Ministry has announced it will resume the search for missing Malaysia Airline flight MH370 later this month, more than a decade after the passenger plane disappeared and sparked one of the most enduring mysteries in recent memory.

The deep sea search will recommence on December 30 in conjunction with Malaysia’s Transport Ministry and the US robotics company Ocean Infinity.

“Ocean Infinity has confirmed with the Government of Malaysia that it will recommence seabed search operations for a total of 55 days, to be conducted intermittently,” the Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the search will take place in “targeted areas” that are thought to have the highest chance of locating the plane, as outlined in an agreement the Malaysian government reached with Ocean Infinity back in March.

Details of the exact areas being searched have not yet been revealed.

“The latest development underscores the Government of Malaysia’s commitment in providing closure to the families affected by this tragedy,” the Ministry said.

The announcement comes after Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed earlier this year that the government would be “happy to reopen” the search if enough evidence supported a resumed deep sea mission.

The search will commence almost 12 years on from MH370’s as-yet unexplained disappearance on March 8, 2014.

During a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the Boeing 777-2H6ER vanished from air traffic radar with 12 Malaysian crew and 227 passengers on board.

Neither the crew nor the passengers — which included seven Australian citizens — were found in the years since. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it welcomed Malaysia’s renewed search efforts.

“Australia supports all practical efforts to locate Malaysia Airlines flight MH370,” they said, per news.com.au.

“We welcome Malaysia’s decision to engage Ocean Infinity to resume the search later this month and hope this brings closure to families who have endured so much since the tragedy.”
