Make students imbibe folk literature: Uttar Pradesh governor to university

LUCKNOW: Governor Anandiben Patel on Wednesday advised Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti Language University (KMCLU) to make folk literature, lullabies and ‘mangal’ songs part of academic best practices at the university level.

She also asked the university to adopt new societal changes in its curriculum.

The governor gave the tips during the National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC) preparation review meeting held with KMCLU vice-chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai and other officials at Raj Bhawan.

She also asked teachers to work even on holidays, if needed, to complete the NAAC preparation.

“According to the standards set by NAAC for evaluation, a system should be made by dividing the responsibilities at all points. The University should form a committee that should work on improving the academic standards and other shortcomings,” said Patel.

She said this would be the first attempt of the university to go for a NAAC assessment and hence preparation should be done on the basis of instructions given during the two-day NAAC Manthan workshop held at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University on April 4 and 5.

Talking about the adoption of best practices and innovation at the university level, the governor emphasized on the compilation of folk literature that nurtures Indian culture.

She said that in India, mothers used to sing lullabies to put their children to sleep. Also, women used to sing various types of ‘mangal’ songs on various occasions like marriage ceremonies and auspicious times, which are becoming extinct in modern society. Universities can get such songs compiled at their level, she added.

She also emphasized on bringing innovation to researches carried out at the university.

“Many welfare schemes are being run by the government and the social changes arising out of such schemes can also be the subject of research,” she said.
