Make junk food costlier, tighten school canteen rules: Five steps ICMR suggests to curb childhood obesity

India just found out that 41 million of its children are overweight or obese, and the government's top nutrition scientists have decided enough is enough. On Thursday, the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, through its 'Let's Fix Our Food' Consortium, released a policy document that reads less like a health report and more like a warning letter to junk food companies, school canteens, and TV advertisers alike. The document, titled 'Priority Policy Actions to Promote Healthier Diets and Food Environments for Children and Adolescents in India', was launched by Dr. M. Srinivas, Member (Health) at NITI Aayog, and it lays out exactly how India plans to stop its children from eating their way into a diabetes crisis.
