'Make it so' say fans as they call on UEFA to host a European final in city

After Liverpool hosted the Eurovision song contest people are calling for the city to take on more huge events.

Yesterday the ECHO's Connor O'Neill put forward his argument for Liverpool to once again host a European final after 30 years of the city being starved of such a chance.

With the construction of Everton's Bramley Moore Dock stadium and the Anfield Road developments at Anfield, Connor said the time is now for that to change.

He wrote: "Understandably, Merseyside was deprived of hosting major finals due to both Goodison Park and Anfield not being in the same league as some of the modern stadia that exists in the UK.

"However, that argument can no longer be made. On Thursday morning, Liverpool confirmed they had passed a major checkpoint in their Anfield Road expansion project after lifting the 282-tonne roof off this week.

He added: !While across Stanley Park, Everton are preparing for the biggest move in their history. The club’s new location on the banks of the Mersey is taking shape.

"Everton confirmed their £500m stadium plans back in July 2021 as they prepare to wave goodbye to Goodison Park, their home for the last 130 years. Building started on the site at Bramley-Moore Dock the following month, and everything remains on track for the club to be in their new home next year.

"So with stadiums no longer being an issue, thoughts will instead turn to whether Liverpool has the ability to stage a major event. But what transpired during two weeks back in May put those questions and concerns firmly to bed."

Fans called on UEFA to 'make it so' and called the new Bramley Moore Dock stadium 'perfect for showcasing Liverpool on the international football stage'.

Others placed both Anfield and Everton in a list together with the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, Wembley, Old Trafford and the Etihad, saying that, like those stadiums, they "should also be considered for major football events."

One ECHO commenter, 'Fibonacci' said: "Either stadium (new in our case) would make an excellent venue, and the city would do a great job of hosting.

"Flies in ointment? Anfield arguably not close enough to the city centre and our public transport (in every city in England) is an absolute joke in comparison to just about every other major European city."

On Twitter, others said 'it would be great for the city if one of the grounds hosted a final'. One Liverpool fan said: "Two boss sets of European fans on the ale in town would be great."

Dave Hill said: "Liverpool's pitch is too small but [Everton's] new ground would be a perfect choice."
