Since Ballotpedia started tracking district attorney (DA) recalls in 2010, there have been 28 attempts in 13 states. California had the highest number of DA recall attempts in that time frame with five. Washington was second with four. Michigan, Nebraska, and Virginia were next with three each.
Since coverage began, there has been an average of two DA recall attempts per year. Ballotpedia did not identify any DA recalls in 2013 or 2014.
As of 2023, only two district attorney recalls covered by Ballotpedia resulted in a DA being removed from office. This puts the success rate of district attorney recalls at around 7%. Many recalls never make the ballot due to supporters collecting an insufficient number of valid signatures. Petitions can also be denied by county elections offices for formatting or language issues or blocked by courts due to a failure to meet specific grounds.
Ballotpedia is tracking four ongoing district attorney recalls—three in Virginia and one in California. So far in 2023, only one new DA recall attempt has been identified: an effort to recall Alameda County DA Pamela Price in California.Additional reading:
