Hundreds of holidaymakers in a hotel popular with UK tourists were evacuated when a ceiling collapsed - seriously injuring two people. The incident happened at the Blue Seas Piscis in Puerto d'Alcudia, in the northeast of Majorca, on Saturday afternoon.
The two people who were seriously injured are understood to be employees with a 59-year-old man and 57-year-old woman both rushed to hospital. The incident occurred when the false ceiling of the hotel's gymnasium collapsed into the kitchen below.
It was reported that heavy machines from the gym fell into the basement area, where the kitchen was located, trapping the female staff member against a wall. Emergency services fought for some time to free those trapped and the area around the hotel was sealed off.
Some 300 guests were moved to alternative accommodation as a precaution and the hotel has been closed while an investigation into the incident begins. The Blue Sea Piscis is an adults-only hotel located in the centre of Puerto de Alcudia and a short distance from the beach.
The hotel has 206 rooms and is used by many British holiday operators. There has been speculation that the incident was caused by a gas leak but investigations are continuing.
Initially, there was great concern as the condition of the two people trapped was not known and there were fears for their lives. The Majorca fire service said clients have been relocated to other hotels whilst the structure of the building is checked.
