Major west London road to close for more than a month

The A40 is set to close for more than a month as critical safety work takes place.

Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the major west London road will be closed between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover in both directions from 22:00 on March 20 to late April.

The A40 Westway is one of the capital’s busiest routes, with around 96,000 motorists using the flyover every day.

The carriageway, which was built in 1970, is supported by around 20 concrete bridge structures. Some of these structures have now reached the end of their service life, with two joints on the flyover scheduled to be replaced to improve safety and support traffic movements.

Stuart Harvey, TfL's chief capital officer, said: "It’s vital that we ensure the A40 flyover is well maintained for the tens of thousands of people who use it each day. This essential work will allow the flyover to continue to be used safely.”

The work has been scheduled during a quieter period over Easter when traffic flows are slightly lower and will require a full carriageway closure.

Instead, motorists travelling between the M25 and central London are being advised to use the M4 and A4 instead.

Those travelling between outer London and central London should take the A312 Parkway or the A406 North Circular Road, which links to the A4.

Bus routes will also be affected by the closure, so commuters should check TfL services before travelling.

The A40 is also scheduled to be shut once again following completion of this phase of work. The road will be closed to westbound traffic at the Westway roundabout every weekend excluding bank holidays until July 6.
