Major supermarkets recall sweets after warning they could be unsafe to eat

Jelly sweets have been recalled from major supermarkets after a packaging mix-up means some packs contain a “possible health risk”.

Packets of The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes have been recalled as they may contain wheat, which is not mentioned on the sweets’ label.

Manufacturer Mondelez International is recalling the sweets because some packs may contain Liquorice Allsorts, which contain wheat.

The company has warned that the sweets are a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease as well as anyone with a wheat allergy.

A Food Standards Agency (FSA) alert said: “The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes, 130g may in error contain a Liquorice Allsorts sweet, following a possible cross-contamination during the packaging process.

“Liquorice contains wheat flour and consequently presents a potential risk to health to those who are allergic to wheat protein.

“If you have an allergy to wheat please do not consume this product.”

Customers who have bought the product and have coeliac disease or a wheat allergy have been advised not to eat the sweets.

Instead, they can be returned and refunded at the shop where they were bought.

The FSA said the recall applies to the following batches sold at supermarkets:

  • The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes 130g (best before December 16 2024 - batch code OSH0B35072)

  • The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes 130g (best before December 17 2024 - batch codes OSH0F35111, OSH0B35112, OSH0F35112)

  • The Natural Confectionery Co. Jelly Snakes 130g (best before December 18 2024 - batch code OSH0F35121)
