Major search operation paused at Ystradfellte Falls after one woman is found dead and another remains missing

A massive search effort at a Welsh beauty spot for a missing woman was stood down on Thursday evening as darkness fell. The rescue mission - involving fire crews, mountain rescue and the National Police Air Support - has been ongoing throughout Thursday after the body of a woman was recovered from a waterfall near Glynneath.

On Thursday morning, police confirmed they were still looking for a second woman at Ystradfellte Falls, known as the Four Waterfalls Walk in Brecon Beacons National Park. Officers were first called to the site at about 11.45am on Wednesday, January 4 after reports that two women were missing. High, fast-flowing water meant the search was called off on Wednesday evening, however it resumed this morning at first light.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Sadly, we can confirm the body of a woman has been recovered from the river. Families of both women have been informed, and will be supported by specialist officers as the search continues. Efforts are ongoing to locate a second woman, who is also believed to be in the river."

Late on Thursday afternoon, police confirmed the search had been called off again due to poor light and water conditions. It will resume in the morning. You can get more local news and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.
