Major Scots road shut down due to 'serious' early-morning multi-vehicle smash

Two men are in hospital after a 'serious' multi-vehicle crash during the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services raced to the A71 near the Dalmahoy junction in Edinburgh after receiving the alarm at half-past midnight. A 28-year-old man, a driver of one of the vehicles, was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries.

The other driver, a 19-year-old man, was also taken to hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.

Police informed motorists of the closure this morning following the incident, which involved two vehicles.

Access to the Dalmahoy Hotel is still being granted, however only from the Edinburgh side of the closure, Edinburgh Live reports. The incident occurred during the early hours between Hatton Bridge and Addiston Mains, with Several Lothian Bus routes also diverted until the road reopens.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 0.30am on Monday, 15 August, to a report of a two car crash on Calder Road, Dalmahoy, Edinburgh.

“A 28-year-old man, the driver of one of the vehicles, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries. A 19-year-old man, the other driver, was also taken to hospital.

“The road is closed and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A Lothian Bus service alert noted that the X27 and X28 are currently being diverted away from the incident. It says: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve part of A71 between Sighthill and Wilkieston and are instead diverted via Bonnington Road, Cliftonhall Road, Glasgow Road and A720 both directions until further notice. Due to increased traffic on this diversion buses are also subject to delays."
