Major plan will make park in Mansfield 'a better place to come'

Improvements at a park in Mansfield including a new centrepiece building with a cafe and changing rooms have been welcomed by walkers who say 'it will make it a better place to come'.

The new building at Berry Hill Park will also include changing rooms and toilets.

While improvements are also planned to footpaths.

Park-goers have been speaking about the changes and said they were in favour.

Conservation advisor Jim Egan, 60, said: “I think it will make it a better place to come.

“Most of what they have got planned is really good.

“The cafe and toilets will be really good.

“I think it will be better - I think it’s a really good idea.”

Another park-goer, who was walking her dog but asked not to be named, also spoke of the benefits.

“It’s a good idea," she said. "You can’t stay for long because there aren’t any toilets.

“It’s a good local park to bring the dogs for a walk.

“It will be better for the children to have some better facilities and update it.”

The public have been asked to share their thoughts with Mansfield District Council as part of the authority's bid to the Government's Towns Fund for £2.94m as they look to improve facilities at the park.

Jon Sheaff & Associates Architects have drawn up a vision for the park and the new site layout and artist impressions of what visitor facilities could look like are being installed on panels in Berry Hill Park.

Michael Peach, 72, who goes to the park to take his dog Casper for a walk, said there should be improvements for children.

Mr Peach said: “You are losing a good bit of the park for it.

“You’ve got everything you want.

“I think there should be a few more things for the kids. I think they should be a compound for small kids.”

Executive Mayor Andy Abrahams said: “The response to the consultation was fantastic and by far the biggest number of participants we’ve had to any of our recent consultation activities.

“The overwhelming majority of park users want to see improved visitor facilities such as toilets, café and parking closely followed by better play facilities for children with improved paths and trails to enhance the natural biodiversity of the area.

“At the heart of the plan for Berry Hill is our heritage, rich history and geology.

"This will be considered in all aspects of the development from the fabric of buildings to the materials used in the footpaths and play areas.

"The aim of a Destination Park is to offer an experience that goes above and beyond what an average park would offer.

"It is hoped that this will draw in more visitors to the district which would boost the local economy."
