Major Liverpool transfer back on after failed January move: report

Liverpool Anfield Kop.

Andy Robertson officially confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season, with a summer transfer to Tottenham Hotspur now considered likely, as per The Athletic.

Robertson's departure, announced by the club on Thursday April 9, follows months of speculation regarding the Scotland captain’s future.

The 32-year-old will depart as a free agent after nine trophy-laden years on Merseyside, during which time he helped redefine the modern full-back role, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League in the process.

A prospective move to North London would represent a successful second attempt for Spurs, who are said to be front-runners.

Tottenham were close to landing Robertson’s signature during the January transfer window, reportedly getting as far as agreeing terms with the player. However, the deal collapsed on deadline day after Liverpool failed to secure a replacement, specifically due to an injury to Joe Gomez and the inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from AS Roma.

"It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool," Robertson said in his official statement.

"But I know football moves on. I think now is the time for me to go wherever my next move takes me."

The arrival of Milos Kerkez at Anfield earlier this season saw the veteran’s minutes limited under Arne Slot, but Tottenham evidently believe Robertson’s leadership qualities are what's needed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He follows fellow icon Mohamed Salah out of the door at Anfield as the club continues to transition away from the Jurgen Klopp era.

Robertson will receive a rousing farewell when Liverpool face Brentford in their final home game of the season and could officially join Spurs in July upon the expiry of his contract, although this is contingent on Tottenham remaining in the Premier League.

The club are perched precariously above the relegation zone and find themselves amidst the unfamiliar territory of a battle against the drop.

Robertson reportedly has alternative options to Spurs, including offers and interest from other top European leagues, which may move to the top of the pecking order should the North London club succumb to the drop.

Tottenham remain 2/1 to be relegated with mainstream bookmakers.
