Major incident declared by Avon and Somerset Police after bus and motorbike crash

Avon and Somerset Police have declared a major incident after crash involving a double-decker bus and a motorbike earlier this morning (January 17). The crash has been reported close to the Hinkley Point C power station in Somerset.

The crash, which happened around 6.00am took place on the A39 in Somerset, has reportedly resulted in a double-decker bus being overturned and lying on its side, according to police. It is thought the incident happened as a result of the extremely cold weather and ice on the roads.

No injuries have been reported yet, but this is yet to be confirmed; all emergency services are currently on the scene near Bridgwater and road closures are in place from the Shell Garage up to the roundabout at the A39 at Sandford Hill.

Police are advising drivers to avoid the area whilst the necessary clean-up and recovery operations are underway.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called at around 6am today (Tuesday 17 January) to the A39 Quantock Road following a road-related incident involving a double decker bus and a motorcyclist.

"Closures are in place at the junction of Sandford Hill and Quantock Road. A significant number of police, fire and ambulance units are on the scene and a major incident has been declared.

"Please only travel if it is absolutely essential. The conditions are extremely icy and dangerous due to the freezing conditions overnight and residual water on the road from the past week's wet weather."

Hinkley Point C and EDF Energy have been contacted for further comment.
