A major fire has broken out at a scrapyard sending approximately 200 tonnes of rubbish up in flames.
Fire crews from across the county have been helping to fight the blaze on Dennis Road in Widnes this evening (Wednesday). Smoke was seen billowing for miles across Cheshire and Merseyside after the fire broke out at around 5.45pm.
A number of road closures have been put in place including Dennis Road at the junction with Earle Road, and Tan House Lane at the junction of Moss Bank Road and Fiddlers Ferry Road. People are being asked to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing and residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut.

In an update this evening, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire involves approximately 200 tonnes of scrap. Crews are working to protect a building on site, which is not involved in the fire.
Fire engines from Widnes, Penketh, Runcorn, Warrington, Chester, Frodsham, Birchwood and Lymm were sent to scene. Staff members were reportedly sent home from a number of nearby businesses after the fire broke out this evening.
