Plans for a new housing development at a former garden centre have been put forward. The site of the former centre, in Cauldwell Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, is currently a large storage facility for caravans and motorhomes mostly surrounded by fields and a few residential properties, but plans for seven new homes has now been applied for.
Green 2K Design LTD will carry out the works, if plans are approved by Ashfield District Council. A total of 29 car parking spaces have been proposed at the site.
Independent councillor Matthew Relf, Ward for Sutton Junction and Harlow Wood, has said that he has "fond memories" of the garden centre. He added that Cauldwell Road was once a link through to Mansfield but, when that stopped being the case, it had an impact on the centre's passing trade.
Poll: Are you worried about the number of empty shops in Nottingham city centre?
Councillor Matthew Relf said: "I actually have very fond memories of the garden centre. Back when Cauldwell Road used to be the link through to Mansfield we used to drive past it all the time and regularly called in for when my parents needed something for the garden.
"So yes, remember it fondly. I can't remember the exact date [of when the garden centre closed], but it was basically when our road got built and cut off Cauldwell Road through the middle. That had a huge impact upon their passing trade. I don't think it was long after that that it shut."
