Pedestrian dies after being struck by truck

A man has died in hospital after being struck by a truck on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to Maitland Road in Sandgate, near the Wallsend Road intersection, around 9am.

Initial reports to emergency services about the incident indicated that a man had been struck by a truck.

An Ambulance NSW spokesperson confirmed a man in his 40s was being treated by paramedics at the scene.

The spokesperson said the patient was being transported to John Hunter hospital in a critical condition.

Police have since been notified that the man died in hospital.

He is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old man, was not injured; however, was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash are under way.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Southbound lanes were closed on Maitland Road for much of the day, with motorists forced to divert onto the Newcastle Inner City Bypass to avoid the area.

Traffic was heavy in the area, prompting police to urge motorists to allow extra travel time through the congested area.

Both lanes were reopened as of 2pm on Monday afternoon.
