Maine Celtics head coach and longtime Boston Celtics alumnus Alex Barlow is leaving the Portland-based Celtics G League affiliate to accept an assistant coaching job under Thad Matta at Butler, according to recent reporting from Hoops Dirt.
Returning to the school Barlow left to join Boston and then-head coach Brad Stevens (who had been his coach as a player at Butler) is something of a full-circle return for the former Butler Academic All-American. He began his career with the Celtics as a video assistant to Stevens in 2015, working his way up through the organization to eventually helm the Maine Celtics.

“I’ve been lucky to work with and learn from some of the best in the business during my time in Boston, and I’m excited to bring that experience back to Hinkle,” he added.
“My family and I know firsthand how special Butler is; it was always a dream to be a part of this program again. I can’t thank Coach Matta enough for this opportunity to work alongside him and his great staff. Go Dawgs!”
