Maia Dunphy thanks Gardai for retrieving stolen handbag owned by her late mother

Maia Dunphy has thanked Gardai for their assistance in tracking down a family item that was stolen in Dublin city centre.

The television producer was extremely upset after the handbag, which belonged to her late mother, was stolen from a coffee shop on Dawson Street. Maia immediately took to Twitter in the aftermath of the theft to ask her followers to keep an eye out for it.

Miraculously, the bag was found within hours and brought to Pearse Street Garda Station. Maia was left delighted by the recovery and penned an emotional thank you to those who came to her assistance.

She wrote on Twitter: "'I'm not sure where to begin! I am beyond grateful to the wonderful Gardai at Pearse St station. They got my mum's bag back. And my keys, phone and other handbag detritus (all the suff!). Losing this bag hit me disproportionately hard, and I am very, very thankful."

She also squashed claims that Gardai helped her more readily because she was a public figure. She thanked the Garda who helped reunite her with the bag in her Tweet and apologised for being "disproportionately upset" at the time.

Although her cards were stolen in the robbery, Maia solely cared about the sentimental value of the bag. She explained to her followers that there was a story behind the beloved item.

Fans were delighted to hear that Maia had recovered the stolen item, which she had only began using in recent times. Maia's mother sadly passed away in February last year after a battle with cancer.

One person mentioned that Maia should reward Gardai with a small gesture for their quick response to the theft.

The person wrote: "It’d be nice to drop off some coffee and chocs/ pastry for his break some morning . Fair play for him getting it back."

Maia was clearly following up on thanking the Garda, as she responded with: "Way ahead of you."

She also thanked the public for their supportive messages after the theft. The broadcaster said she was "indebted" to Gardai and couldn't believe her luck following the bag's safe return.
