- Home secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review by the Border Security Command after describing the failure to intercept two migrant boats reaching the Kent coast as completely unacceptable.
- The incidents involved a dinghy landing undetected at Folkestone on Monday morning followed by a second boat arriving at Samphire Hoe in Dover on Tuesday afternoon, where 21 individuals were detained by authorities.
- These arrivals represent the first uncontrolled small boat landings in the UK for a year, a rare occurrence given that only one other such incident has been officially recorded since the Home Office began tracking data in 2023.
- Mahmood noted that people-smuggling gangs are adapting to enhanced UK surveillance by changing tactics and launching vessels from much further west in France , resulting in longer and more dangerous Channel crossings.
- A Government spokesperson confirmed that Kent Police and Border Security Command officers are conducting a thorough investigation into the Dover incident following a swift enforcement response.
