MUMBAI: As many as 214 convicts, lodged in various prisons in the state, will be released within 12 months. The first batch of convicts is likely to be released on Independence Day next week.
Maharashtra has around 6,000 convicts, many of whom work in central prison factories as well. The state government has sent a list of the convicts, to be released, to the governor for a formal approval / order. The order is expected before August 15.
The shortlisted prisoners will be released in three batches — on August 15, 2022; January 26, 2023 (Republic Day), and August 15, 2023.
The convicts get special remission in some categories and their behavior, period they spent in jail, the jail remission period, etc are considered during the process. The suggestion is made by the prison authorities to the state government which studies the list of prisoners to be released and then forwards it to the governor. This practice is conducted as per the Union government's directions to give remission to convicts in certain categories.
