Magnitude-3.6 earthquake shakes upstate New York: ‘Very scary’

A magnitude-3.6 earthquake shook up residents in upstate New York on Sunday, officials said.

The small earthquake happened in Jefferson County shortly after 2 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. The organization recorded the quake within a mile of Adams Center, a hamlet about 10 miles south of Watertown.

“We felt it here in Fowler (east of Gouverneur),” resident Brenda Maxson commented on a Facebook post by the local news station WWNY. “House rattled, heard vibration/rumble. My Son who lives in Troy NY said he felt a slight rumble even out there (nothing big, just as if a ... truck went by his apartment, which doesn’t happen often).”

A number of commenters said they could feel the earthquake in Watertown, located about 70 miles north of Syracuse. Others said they felt it in the villages of Tupper Lake and Clayton.

“Big bang /rumble and house shook — very scary,” wrote Adams Center resident Susan O’Donnell.

Authorities did not report any injuries or damage.

Sunday’s incident took place a little over a week after a magnitude-2.6 earthquake struck near Adams Center on April 14, according to WWNY.
