Magherafelt: Shock and sadness after scrambler bike crash claims life of young man

There was deep shock and sadness in a Co Derry town on Sunday following news that a man in his 20s died after a crash.

The rider of a scrambler bike was involved in the crash at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

The collision happened on the Castledawson Road in Magherafelt.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The victim has not yet been named but there has been a widespread outpouring of grief and sympathy since news of the tragedy first emerged on Sunday morning.

Floral tributes to the young man were laid at the crash scene.

SDLP Councillor Christine McFlynn said people in Magherafelt were in shock after the death of the young man.

Cllr McFlynn said: “There is a deep sense of shock and sadness in Magherafelt today following a fatal collision involving a scrambler on Saturday afternoon. A young man in his 20s has been taken from his family and his community far too soon.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those who knew him at this incredibly difficult time. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of the accident on Saturday or who has dash cam footage to come forward to police as soon as possible.”

Mid-Ulster Sinn Féin councillor Cora Corry said it was awful to wake up to the tragic news that a young life had been lost on our roads.

"This is a very busy stretch of road coming out of the main town of Magherafelt onto Castledawson so speeding can be a problem," Councillor Corry told the BBC.

"It's a really busy road and definitely something we're going to have to look at. It's been raised before and I know with it being such a busy road we're asking people to come forward to the police with any information they would have."

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and are asking witnesses or anyone who may have captured dashcam footage to please get in touch by calling 101, quoting reference 1299 13/08/22."
