Chelsea skipper Magdalena Eriksson to leave Chelsea at the end of the season

Chelsea have announced that Magdalena Eriksson will depart the club at the end of the season.

The future of the Swedish defender in west London has been heavily discussed, with Eriksson’s current contract running out in the summer.

Recent reports from Germany have claimed the 29-year-old, along with Chelsea teammate Pernille Harder, who is also out of contract at the end of this season, have signed contracts with Frauen-Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich.

Eriksson revealed in a video through Chelsea’s social media channels that she would be departing the club come summer, though she did not divulge the next destination of her football career.

“It’s really difficult to talk about it or even say it out loud. It feels kind of surreal,” the Chelsea star said through tears. “The news that I have for the fans and the world is that I will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. It’s been an unbelievable time, the best time of my life.

“It has been six unbelievable years, together with my teammates, together with the fans, the club in general. And I feel so privileged to have been on this journey with the club. We’ve really established as ourselves as one of the best clubs in the world and it’s been such an amazing journey.

“So I feel, I’m not only sad, though it might look like it, but I’m also really really happy and just proud of the whole journey and everything we’ve been through together. It’s mixed emotions for sure.”

The club captain has played an integral role in Chelsea’s bid for the domestic double this season, slotting into the backline to replace the injured Kadeisha Buchanan and Millie Bright.

Eriksson joined Chelsea at the of the 2017/18 campaign from Swedish club Linkopings and after scoring on her debut against Bristol City, has helped the club to an unprecedented four WSL titles, three FA Cup titles, two Women’s League Cups and the 2020 Community Shield.
