Magdalena Bay at O2 Brixton Academy: A sci-fi work of art

From the moment Magdalena Bay take to the stage for the London show of their Imaginal Disk Tour, it’s immediately clear that this is more than just a gig: it’s a sci-fi story-driven work of art.

The Los Angeles-based duo, Matt Lewin and Mica Tenenbaum, have been gathering huge buzz after their breakthrough second album, Imaginal Disk. It cemented itself as an instant classic after taken the internet by storm in 2024., and follows the story of a protagonist who has a CD-shaped object implanted into her forehead with the aim of achieving her perfect form. Her body rejects the transformation, forcing her to come face-to-face with what it means to be alive. From moments of rich, ethereal ambiance to grating and almost overstimulating production in the possible best way, it guides you through a journey towards an attempted metamorphosis into one’s True Self. The album’s title is a double entendre about the disk containing inserted into Mica’s brain and imaginal discs, an internal part of insect larvae that forms part of the adult body structure.
