We knew to expect carnage from the Married At First Sight (MAFS) 2026 couples retreat, but I don’t think anyone predicted that the words “finger bangs” would be the source of the drama.
After the couples arrive at the MAFS retreat — which this year is on New South Wales’ South Coast — a giddy Steven Danyluk and Rachel Gilmore shared that while they haven’t had sex, their intimacy has progressed.
Bec Zacharia chose to congratulate the MAFS couple, along with others (like Filip Gregov and Stella Mickunaite for being in love, and Joel Moses and Juliette Fava for not killing each other), but would live to regret her choice of words.
What did Bec say at the MAFS Couples Retreat?
Summoning everyone for her toast, Bec said, “We’ve had I love yous. We’ve had a couple who I thought could not come back from the brink of hell, and we’ve had finger bangs!”
Sam, who noticed a visibly upset Rachel, prompted Bec to apologise.
“It’s not funny,” Rachel told her. “I shared with you guys openly that we took intimacy to a new level, which is really important for Steven and I, and you just made a joke of it.”
Bec then started arguing with Rachel, and even made jokes about her husband, Danny Hewitt, “helping” Steve progress to this stage of intimacy with his wife.
“My husband is the one who has encouraged your husband to finger bang you, darling,” Bec tells producers, only doubling down on the joke, even after she knows it made Rachel upset.
Things get progressively worse throughout the MAFS episode, with Bec making jokes about making “finger bang merch” to other brides by the pool, but then proceeding to tell Rachel how much she supports her relationship at the Girl’s Night afterwards.
Gia Fleur, queen of smelling bullshit (especially when it comes out of Bec), was quick to call her out. “If you support the relationship, why are you going around to Juliette and I saying you want to get merch?” Gia asked.
At this point, some of the women are questioning whether Bec’s apologies are authentic, especially if she only continues to repeat the behaviour afterwards.
I guess all we can do is wait and see if Bec takes accountability and apologises in the coming retreat episodes. And then again at the Commitment Ceremony. And the MAFS Reunion. And again in post-show interviews. Time will tell!
