Madonna announces sequel to beloved album Confessions on a Dance Floor

Madonna is getting hung up all over again with a new comeback album – it will be a sequel to her beloved hit record Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Not only is the Queen of Pop set to release her first album in seven years, but it will be a follow-up to the 2005 record that won her a Grammy Award.

No details are currently known about Confessions II, but on Tuesday (14 April), but a release date has been set of 3 July.

Teasing her new album, Madonna said that it’s best summed up with the first few lines of her song, “One Step Away”, adding: “People think that dance music is superficial, but they’ve got it all wrong. The dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: A ritualistic space where movement replaces language.”

She continued: “When Stuart Price and I first started working on this record, this was our manifesto: ‘We must dance, celebrate, and pray with our bodies. These are things that we’ve been doing for thousands of years — they really are spiritual practices. After all, the dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect.

“’With your wounds, with your fragility. To rave is an art. It's about pushing your limits and connecting to a community of like-minded people.’”

Ahead of the announcement, Madonna wiped her Instagram page clean and shared a story teasing the album announcement. She also changed her bio to “Time goes by so slowly...”, a lyric featured in the song “Hung Up” from the first record.

Confessions on a Dance Floor was considered a return to form for the star and for injecting the 21st century with a splash of old-school disco. Her songs sampled ABBA, Pet Shop Boys, Donna Summer and Depeche Mode – as well as Madonna’s own 1980s output.

The new record marks her first album in seven years, following Madame X in 2019.

Madonna is also harking back to the past with Confessions II in another way – it’s been produced by the record label responsible for distributing many of her classic albums, including American Life (2003) and Hard Candy (2008).

The singer initially launched her recording career in 1982 with Sire Records, which was imprint of Warner Records. There, she released her self-titled 1983 debut album, Madonna, and several of her top hits, including Like A Virgin (1984) and Like a Prayer (1989).

In 1992, she co-founded her own multi-media entertainment company and label, Maverick, in a joint venture with Time Warner. Eventually, her 25-year contract with Warner came to an end with the release of her 2008 album, Hard Candy.

“We are honoured to welcome Madonna back home to Warner Records. Madonna isn’t just an artist — she’s the blueprint, the rule-breaker, the ultimate cultural juggernaut,” Tom Corson and Aaron Bay-Schuck, co-chairmen on Warner Records, said in the statement.

“For decades, she has not only defined the sound of global pop music but also reshaped culture itself with her vision, innovation, and fearless artistry. This signing represents a historic, full circle moment, one that brings her back to the label where it all began and reaffirms her unparalleled influence, setting the stage for an exciting new era of creativity and impact.”
